Embrace life, like a Mayfly
I love this ad, despite its obvious corniness. And hey, I even remembered that it was for Vodafone!
Aussies, you could skip this video since you’ve probably see this on TV already.
Wikipedia has a less flattering description of Mayflies but I’m not going to let this ruin the ad for me :)
Ruby Nuby Night Screencasts
Screencasts of some of the presentations at the recent nuby night at Melbourne’s Ruby user group are now up on Cogent’s website.A big thanks to Marty Andrews for loaning his expensive equipment to the group and facilitating the recording of these screencasts. You can download copies of my slides here.
[Update] Photos from the night can be seen here.
Success
One defintion: “The achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted”
How boring.
Life’s unpredictability is what makes it so much more beautiful. Why do we (I) insist on attempting to control it? If we ’succeeded’ we would only limit our experience to what we can imagine. I’m glad we fail sometimes.
Love learning
I chanced upon this thought provoking quote by John Holt on Josh Kaufman’s blog.
Since we can’t know what knowledge will be most needed in the future, it is senseless to try to teach it in advance. Instead, we should try to turn out people who love learning so much and learn so well that they will be able to learn whatever needs to be learned.
Josh has also put together something he calls The Personal MBA, which is at its essence, a reading list of 40 books. Of course there’s more to it than this but you’ll have you read its manifesto to find out the rest.
Making impossible choices
How do you choose which of the world’s numerous problems to solve first?
Considering all the publicity Climate Change has received recently, I found the contrarian perspective offered by Larry Brilliant during his talk at TED really interesting. He describes an economic approach to comparing problems – solutions actually.
Turns out the the incredibly smart freakonomists watched the same video and decided to offer their own take on the subject.
I wonder though, do we really have to choose?
